Don’t Let Your Law Firm Flounder! How SEO Can Help!

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, then you know that the economy has been in a rut lately, and getting new legal clients has been rather difficult. People still need law firms and attorneys even in a down economy, but the fact of the matter is that they are less willing to spend money on attorneys fees when they have less money to begin with. None of this should come as any surprise, but it is surprising how often law firms and attorneys are at a loss when it comes to ways to find new clients. Many lawyers don’t know the first thing about marketing.

If you own or operate a law firm and haven’t had as much new business as you would like, then I want to introduce you to the concept of  SEO is a spectacular way to find new legal clients, but it’s not the only method you should use. I think it’s the best way, but every lawyer should look down multiple avenues for new clients. Here’s why more law firms should pay attention to search engine optimization:

1. Give up Outbound Marketing: It’s quite typical to distinguish between marketing that is outbound and marketing that is inbound. Outbound marketing is the more common and well-known type of marketing. When you go out networking, or when you email a contact that you think might be interest in your product or service, you are engaging in outbound marketing. On the other hand, inbound marketing is marketing that aims to make a company visible to any potential clients who are actively looking for services or products offered by that company. Don’t get too caught up on whether something is inbound or outbound. It’s the general distinction that is important. Typically, has been outbound and has focused on either a single potential client or a small group of potential clients. Search Engine Optimization allows you to reach more potential clients more quickly.

2. Cost: This may be the most important reason. You simply don’t want to spend your hard-earned money. Advertising – even in print, but especially on TV – gets very expensive very fast. Don’t read this as meaning that I don’t encourage online advertising. To the contrary, it can be very profitable for your firm. However, SEO is often money better spent. Part of the reason that SEO is great for small businesses is because the results can last a very long time from a relatively small spend.

3. Competitors: Your main goal is to take a bigger share of the market, which means you need to be better than other law firms. One of the best ways to differentiate your firm is to market yourself in a different way. Currently, in almost every market, it’s still relatively easy to get ranked well, but the situation is not going to last forever.

Working at a law firm or by yourself as a solo practitioner, either way, can be daunting and stressful. However, finding clients doesn’t need to be the most difficult part of your legal practice. Across the country, more and more businesses are starting to realize the power that the search engines hold.

Take action now. Whether it’s hiring a professional firm like ours to take your marketing to the next level, or just getting started yourself.
